First, list your garage sale on Craigslist. List it under Garage sales and make sure you are on your city page. If your sale will be on the weekend, list it Monday before the sale and relist again on Wednesday. Craigslist is the best way to make known your garage sale, yard sale, or moving sale.

WHEN: I think the best time to have a sale is FRIDAY NIGHT and SATURDAY morning. Friday nights are becoming very popular; I have seen many people going to yard sales on Friday evenings. If you subdivision allows for it, put your signs out a few days before the sale. That way people can plan to come to it. ALSO, Check with your local city and subdivision. Many have restrictions now. One nice subdivision near me doesn't allow signs. People get around it by pulling their vehicle up near the entrance and putting a sign in the window. It works very well.

SIGNS You may make them or buy them at your local hardware store. A Neon color is helpful with black lettering. If you make them, check the weather for rain. If it will be raining before the sale, either get the waterproof board, or wait to put them up before the sale. The waterproof board isn't that expensive at Walmart, you do no need to make every sign out of it.

*Make them clear and write big enough to read from car and not many details. Many people make the mistake of writing too much and the driver doesn't have time to read the sign while driving by.

It's been a while since I posted here. Hope your garage sales are all going well and making you lots of spare cash!

I'm dropping a line to let you know about a great site I found. I've a couple of kids and on rainy days it's difficult to keep them occupied. The site I found allows parents to print out free coloring pages for their kids to color.

It's handy if you're stuck with kids climbing the walls for something to do. Remember to reuse paper that has already been printed on one side to print out the pages (but make sure it's flattened out or you'll get the dreaded paper jam!) and do your bit for the environment.

When considering your garage sale pricing you should try to see your stock as your customers will see it. An easy way to maximize the value of your items is to ensure they are clean and well presented.

What Would You Pay More For?

Have you ever attended a couple of garage sales in the same neighbour hood? What stock were you more likely to pay more for; dirty and dusty items muddled together or shining, clean items well grouped and presented?

A Little Spit n’ Polish

Make sure ceramics, pans and cutlery are cleaned and polished. The shin alone will attract attention to the objects. Position items on tables so that potential buyers won’t have to stoop down to inspect the quality of an item (this will also help prevent accidental breakages by children running around etc.).

Position your best wares so that they draw attention from passers-by and put big, good condition items out front as a main attraction.

A New Home For Toys

Make sure soft toys are spotlessly clean and looking like new. Nobody wants to buy their kid a flea infested teddy bear that’s been stuck in the back of the dogs kennel for the past two years! Take the time to clean it up and put it on a rug with the other toys so that kids get a chance to play. If little Johnny likes it enough he’ll torment his parents until it’s paid for (that’s what garage sales are all about!).

I know spot the dog will miss his teddy pillow, just tell him it’s a family effort.

It’s Retro Fashion, Not Old Clothes

Clean and press clothes, hang them up according to size and style. Make sure there’s no boxes or other objects in the way of the rack that restrict access. It’s a good idea to have a full-length mirror near the rack so buyers can hold the clothes up to themselves to see if it’s the garment for them. Changing rooms would be ideal but not always possible (you don’t want strangers walking around your house – with your dress on!).

Electric Lead

People always doubt that second hand electrical items actually work. It doesn’t matter how low the price on the object if buyers think it’s useless. Overcome this by demonstrating to buyers that they do work. Have an extension lead to hand so that you can plug in electrical items. This is the difference between selling an old radio and not selling it.

Garage Sale Pricing is usually negotiable. With this in mind remember to price some more expensive items a little higher than you are hoping to get. If you want to get $10 for an old lamp, you might want to price it at $12.50 in the expectation that the buyer will haggle with you to bring the price down.

Be careful not to over price an item as it might drive buyers away.

How Much For The Lot?

If you have some items that you can’t shift at your sale it might be a good idea to make lots with them and some other more desirable items.

So you might combine two t-shirts that won’t sell on their own with two t-shirts that have more buyer appeal. Offer a price for the items sold separate (same price for each t-shirt) and a second reduced price for the lot that offers a great bargain. In fact all you are doing is getting the value of the two desirable t-shirts and some cash for the less desirable garments.

Golden Rule – Never Under Price Your Garage Sale

If the garage sale is to run for a few days it’s a good idea to put higher prices on items to begin with. There’s a chance you might sell items for more than you had hoped!

Items that are not selling at the higher price can be reduced as the days pass offering more of a bargain to buyers and getting at least some cash for the things you’re willing to let go.

Just remember, the golden rule is don’t under price because you can always lower the price later if someone wants to haggle.
